National Webinar on Menstrual Hygiene

Menstrual Hygiene Day: National Webinar on Menstrual Hygiene and Waste Management

On World Menstrual Hygiene Day – 28th May, 2021, Lal Sakhi: The Women’s Voice organized a national webinar to discuss the aspects of menstrual hygiene and how it is associated with waste management as well. It showcased the usage of menstrual cups by rural women who were given training and encouragement by Lal Sakhi.

Lal Sakhi as an organization believes in the fact that promotion and usage of menstrual cups can significantly decrease the usage of raw clothes by many women in our country with proper counselling. The reason for this belief is that it is hugely economical in nature as compared to the usage of sanitary pads in the long run. Also, sanitary pads take hundreds of years to degrade making it not as eco-friendly. But menstrual cups are made of medical-grade silicone which can be used for a longer run, thus producing less wastage.

This essentially can help reduce the waste management issues as well as increase the usage of the cups for better menstrual hygiene. Lal Sakhi in this video tries to break that stigma attached with usage of menstrual cups as currently its adoption is very low in our country.

In this session, 100+ young professionals and students participated. The session had eminent speakers like:

(1) Prof. Ruchi Sinha , TISS Mumbai

(2) Swati Meena Naik, IAS, Director (WCD), Govt of Madhya Pradesh

(3) Dr. Babita Saxena, HoD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, GHMC, Bhopal

(4) Prof. Deboshri Sarkar, NLIU Bhopal

(5) Mr. Nagesh Patidar, Wash Consultant, UNICEF
